We recommend you collect the car from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport and you hire chains during the winter. This is the easiest way to get in and out of the airport. Once you have hired your car, follow for France and you will then go through the border and once through, follow the A40 for Chamonix. You will come to your motorway exit about 40 minutes from leaving the airport. With new EU regulations it is important to check your chosen car hire company will allow you to drive a hire car collected from the Swiss side into France and vice versa.
